Sudden Adult Acne
Of all days – the day of my demonstration at work, angry-looking red pimples on my face! Why?!
I understand it when my teenage kids’ acne flares up, but it makes no sense why I am dealing with it at
my age.
Bleh! It is just not fair.
What Causes Adult-Onset Acne
We wish this were not the case, but the sudden onset of adult acne is common in women who are in
their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Many of us have been there!
It is a fallacy that if we just get rid of the oil that our face produces, we will prevent pimples.
This is just not sound advice.
Many factors can contribute to adult acne:
- Stress (causes the release of the stress hormone cortisol which can increase the release of oil in the skin glands and lead to blocked pores)
- Hormones (hormonal imbalance, hormonal shift, menstrual cycle)
- Skin products (makeup and moisturizers can clog pores or cause irritation)
- Diet (processed foods, or any foods that lead to inflammation, can cause the body to release more acne-producing sebum)
- Hydration (dehydration can aggravate skin issues and make it more prone to bacteria)
Ways to Prevent Adult-Onset Acne
If you are experiencing adult-onset acne, there are some practical measures that you can take that can
help you reduce and prevent skin breakouts.
Stress Reduction
Stress reduction sounds like a worn-out remedy, right?
When we are in midst of stress, it is easy to forget that we need to not stress. It is good to be reminded that reducing stress helps our body, mind, and soul – but it also helps with the prevention of acne.
To experience peace does not mean that your life is always blissful. It means that you are capable of tapping into a blissful state of mind amidst the normal chaos of a hectic life. – Jill Bolte Taylor
Women typically report that they are dealing with stress more often than men, and there is science behind that.
Women suffer from stress on a different level than men because they have a completely different hormone system.
When long-term stress plays havoc on a woman’s body, it can show up in unexpected ways. In fact, skin
breakouts sit at the top of the Three Surprising Side Effects of Stress for Women.
Non-Comedogenic Skin Products
Look for products that are labeled “non-comedogenic” or those that “will not clog pores.”
These types of products are formulated to not contain ingredients that exacerbate pore blockages and cause skin
breakouts.
Skin-Friendly Diet
Food allergies can lead to irritation and can make skin breakouts worse.
A diet that is based on whole foods vs. processed foods may help in the prevention of acne.
Consider a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including proteins (especially fish, mackerel,
salmon, sardines, and eggs), deep green vegetables, legumes, and healthy nuts (such as walnuts and
almonds) to reduce acne tendencies.
Avoid processed foods, such as white bread, sugar, pasta, white rice, and snack foods such as potato
chips and pretzels.
Sensitivity to dairy products, such as milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt may also lead to skin breakouts.
Try removing these foods from your diet one by one to test for skin sensitivities.
Drink Water
Water keeps your body hydrated. Hydration helps your body flush the toxins out that play havoc on your
body and skin.
Juice and smoothie diets can help your skin as well as they typically contain whole foods, and they help
with hydration, however, the extra sugars can be detrimental to your skin.
Water is the best choice for your skin and your entire system.
Salt Therapy
Salt therapy is proven to help skin health, and this happens in many ways.
In times of stress, taking time to sit and breathe relaxes the mind, and eases anxiety, which helps to
reduce your level of stress.
This is healing to your entire being – including your skin!
Salt therapy provides anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation properties that benefit the skin to help treat
acne as well as other skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema, and more).
How does this work?
The smaller particles released in salt therapy can reach beneath the skin’s surface and absorb moisture. The dry salt also accelerates cell rejuvenation and improves skin texture, leaving the skin plump and feeling soft due to improved hydration.
