Support Austin Local – and Women!
For those of you who are still trying to find that perfect gift (or who completely forgot about Mother’s Day until this moment – don’t worry, we won’t tell🤫), we’ve made a list of five great places to find thoughtful, carefully curated and local gifts for mom this Mother’s Day AND on top of that, all the places on this list are women-owned! Support local and empower women this year by buying from one of the following places:
1. Black Butterfly Bath & Body
Black Butterfly is a cute shop filled with handmade soaps, shea butter, scrubs, shampoos, hair oils, and more. With combinations like coconut and goat’s milk, CBD oil and lemongrass, Frank, Myrrh and Patchouli, and pomegranate and carrot, you’ll be glad you didn’t settle for mass-produced soap.
Black Butterfly’s physical location is at 811 East 13th Street, but they are only open on Saturdays from 11-3. However, you can order online anytime by visiting www.shopblackbutterfly.com. You can have your order shipped to you, or opt to pick it up in-store on a Saturday.
2. Miranda Bennett Studio
Miranda Bennett Studio is an ethical and sustainable apparel brand based in Austin. The clothing is all made here in Austin and the line is 100% non-toxic: their pieces are dyed with plant-derived dyes, made from things like roots, wood, fruits, and seeds. They also have a big focus on sustainability, diverting all of their textile waste from landfills. This year, why not get Mom something that’s not only beautiful, but that you can feel good about?
Miranda Bennett Studio is located at 1211 East 11th Street, Suite 101, at the corner of 11th and Navasota. They have free customer parking behind the building. You can learn more at www.shopmirandabennett.com
3. Parts & Labour
Parts & Labour’s mission has always been to provide space to showcase the talents of Texas-based artists and makers, but in 2020, owner Lizelle Villapando added another mission: to create space and elevate makers of the BIPOC community. She wants to continue to offer the “widest variety of locally designed and produced small batch and bespoke goods created by a diverse and inclusive groups of makers.”
At Parts & Labour, you’ll find quirky locally-designed and made apparel, handmade accessories, candles, frames, greeting cards, soaps and scents, prints from local artists, and more.
Parts & Labour is located at 1704 South Congress Avenue. You can find out more at www.partsandlabourstore.com.
4. Succulent Native
Succulent Native was started by Austin Native Shannon Donaldson, who got into the plant world by selling flowers to passersby on South Congress. However, the unforgiving Texas heat would wilt her flowers, and Shannon realized she needed to be working with something more resilient – something native to the climate. So Succulent Native was born. Today you can buy lavish and creative succulent and cacti arrangements, as well as smaller and simpler plants. They even have teeny tiny, one-inch long cacti in miniscule marbled planters. File that under “Things you didn’t know you needed.”
Succulent Native has two locations. Down south, you’ll find them at 2058 South Lamar Blvd. Up north, you’ll find them at 5501 North Lamar Blvd. Find out more at www.succulentnative.com.
5. Sage Blossom Massage
